“Working in harmony with each other, and with external groups and individuals, will improve our impact and help Rotary survive and prosper into the future.”
Each year, Rotary International highlights November as Rotary Foundation Month to emphasise the importance of and need for Rotarian support of the Rotary Foundation.
The Rotary Foundation helps Rotary members to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace by improving health, providing quality education, improving the environment, and alleviating poverty.
Gina Fiske, the CEO Port Phillip Community Group was an interesting and informative speaker for the club. Gina has a Masters of Organisational Change, a Bachelor of International Politics and Anthropology. In a professional career spanning over 40 years, Gina has worked in the community and human services sector in programme management and direct service delivery, leading improvements in the lives of children youth and families and promoting health and wellbeing initiatives in the community
Congratulations Dennis Tarrant on receiving the Certificate of Appreciation award from the Commonwealth Bank and Our Community for your role as Treasurer.
Not-for-profit treasurers have to get the basics right. There's no room for flimflam, big talk, or massaging the figures. The money just has to be there - or everybody misses out. We owe treasurers a lot.
On behalf of Rotary Central Melbourne's Foundation Committee, I would like to invite you to the 31st Annual Paul Harris Breakfast. This annual breakfast has been held since 1992 with all proceeds going to the Rotary Foundation.
This year we are joined by guest speaker Peter Hitchener OAM, who will be speaking on his career reporting the news.
Rotary Donations in Kind West Footscray Store October 2023 update
As most people are aware, Laurie and Bob have indicated their intention to step back from their extensive DIK involvement at the end of the year and we have been chasing replacements for them. The end of the year looms and how have we done?
As reported in an earlier edition, Frank Dri who has been looking after the clothing and has shipped containers to Samoa put up his hand and is learning what Laurie’s role involves. He still has his L plates on, so please help him get to grips with the role.
We are very pleased to report that the DIK Inc secretarial aspects of Bob’s role will be taken over by George De Souza. George is the treasurer of Rotary Camberwell, and a long time DiK Inc member. Many thanks George.
Other aspects of Bob’s role are being reallocated within the regular volunteers at the store BUT there is still a real need for at least another person who is able to commit to the regular days: Tuesday and Thursday at DIK. This |involves receipt of donations and freight, preparations of goods for shipping and all manner of tasks in the store itself. If we are not able to have someone put their hand up, it could mean that activities at DIK might be curtailed somewhat. Please ask around at your Club for people who might be interested.
Last Wednesday October 25th was the AGM of DiK Inc. Given the current process of reorganization taking place at the store, it was resolved that all of the current office holders, except for the secretary would carry on for a further year, ahead of preparing to establish a different Board structure with which to carry DIK to its next period of growth and operations.
EMPOWER are excited to share that they are once again joining forces with Launch Housing, a crisis accommodation organisation, to spread some holiday cheer by providing Christmas gift hampers to their clients.
This year, their partnership has expanded to include multiple Launch Housing sites, with a goal of assembling a total of 140 hampers. Last year, our Rotary team played a pivotal role in packing the boxes, and our efficiency made the process a breeze.
They are reaching out to us to collaborate with them once more this year. Our Empower Christmas Hampers Day is scheduled for:
A wonderful social evening was held at the Caulfield RSL. Sue Foley led the ban, Bhan Tre with Emma Rodda, playing fabulous Celtic music. The audience joined in singing, and towards the end of the evening were up and dancing a variety of Irish jigs.
Rotary Southbank and Port Phillip Rotary certainly know how to get into the swing of things.

‘SEEDS OF CHANGE’ - EMPOWER
POP-UP EXHIBITION LANDS IN SOUTHBANK NOW TILL DEC 2023
118 CITY ROAD, SOUTHBANK VIC, 3006
Empower Australia collaborated with the Beulah Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Melbourne property developer Beulah, to create a progressive exhibition in Southbank. Known as ‘Seeds of Change’, the experience is designed to highlight local and global food insecurity, while simultaneously exploring the future of retail.
The Seeds of Change exhibition, with the creative direction of designers OneDesignOffice (ODO) at the former BMW site, will be a fusion of art, architecture, technology, and sound, with overarching themes of sustainability.
This immersive experience and guided tour will lead visitors through a captivating storyscape, delving into the profound impact of Empower Australia while encouraging us, as a society, to envision a redefined relationship between consumption and the spirit of generosity. Carefully designed with repurposing and circularity in mind, the exhibition space itself serves as a testament to environmental kindness, utilising recycled materials to effectively reduce waste.
The Seeds of Change exhibit is free to visit and bookings are essential.
