Joan Daniel's history in and legacy to Rotary is quite remarkable. For this and for her service to the printing industry as well as to education through St Leonards School she was awarded an Order of Australia Medal.
- In 1989 Joan Daniels became one of the first two women to become members of Rotary in Australia, when she joined the Rotary Club of Melbourne South.
- In 1994/1994 she was President of our club.
- For many years she was the Chair of our Club’s Vocational/New Generations Committee. As Chair she led the Rotary Youth Enrichment Program for 14 to17 year olds. In November 2011 she organised and led a weekend camp for 40 teenagers in the formation of their own values and moral standards of leadership.
- She also led the Club’s Rotary Youth Leadership Program for 18 to 25 year olds.
- Our Club for many years championed an Indigenous Scholar Program. Its purpose was to provide funds to support an indigenous scholar with day to day expenses while studying health related courses. Joan was the driver of this program. She obtained $5,000 to match the Government’s $5,000 for this program. One of the scholars, Fiona Rigney, is now a successful social worker and says she owes her success entirely to Joan. (2006-2007)
- Governor of Rotary District 9800 (2,300 members in 71 Clubs in and around Melbourne at that time), contributed to the many District 9800 Annual Conferences, and Chaired the District’s Annual Assembly.
