SEPTEMBER : BASIC EDUCATION AND LITERACY

The Rotary theme for September is Basic Education and Literacy. This theme focuses on strengthening communities' ability to support education and literacy for all ages, reducing gender disparity in education, and increasing adult literacy. Rotary members worldwide work on projects to achieve these goals, such as empowering educators, providing resources, and offering literacy programs.

More than 775 million people over the age of 15 are illiterate. That’s 17 percent of the world’s adult population.

Our goal is to strengthen the capacity of communities to support basic education and literacy, reduce gender disparity in education, and increase adult literacy. We support education for all children and literacy for children and adults.

Mentoring, teacher training and adult literacy support are critical to making a differencel.  Port Phillip Rotary is sponsoring a Rotaract student of Siem Reap, Syrprich Chan, who has been keeping us very well informed of her progress. What an inspiration!

SREYPICH CHAN - MY WONDERFUL ACTIVITIES IN SEPTEMBER

Hello Sue and member of the Rotary Club of Port Phillip

I hope you are doing well and staying healthy! I was very excited to write this email to share with you about my journey that I have involved with my community and study this month. I hope you like and enjoy reading my email.

Let's start with my study at University. I have completed my final exam this term and I am really happy with my result. I got A+ in Microeconomic principle subject, A in Human Resource subject, and A- in ASEAN Government subject. I was very excited when I received the result from school that I got all A in this term even though I got one A- but at least I can increase my GPA to 3.70 again. To be honest, I was very upset with my result in the last term that I got only B+ and C+ and it really affected my GPA. Anyway, I try to accept it and bring my mistakes as the lesson learned, as a result I can make it happen to get a good result like what I promised with you and myself to improve my academic performance.

POLIOPLUS PROGRAM
PINKY PROMISE

Rotary launched the PolioPlus program in 1985 with a promise to children everywhere that one day, they won’t have to fear being paralyzed by polio. It has been a long and challenging endeavor to contain wild poliovirus to just two countries, Afghanistan and Pakistan. And as in any marathon, the final mile of polio eradication is the most challenging.

This is why it’s so important for Rotary and Rotaract clubs to use World Polio Day on 24 October as an opportunity to raise awareness. We need to remind our communities about the incredible progress we’ve made toward eradicating this disease and emphasize that polio anywhere will always be a threat to children everywhere.
EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES AND TOOLS FOR TIMOR LESTE
Jim Finlayson has written to thank PORT PHILLIP Rotary former support of EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES and TOOLS for TIMOR-LESTE.
Four cubic meters of educational resources and tools have been packed up at the Donation in Kind store in Altona and are ready to go to Timor Leste. Educational Resources were donated by the Rotary in Port Phillip and Donations in Kind.  Tools have been donated by Sacred Heart Mission in St Kilda and the Men's Shed in Port Phillip.

The educational resources and tools will be send to Judith in Dili to be given to the Salesians in Timor Leste, where they will be distributed to different schools in the city and  mountains that get very little support. Timor Leste is the poorest country in South East Asia. The average income is $10 a day. Life is difficult just to provide basic living items.
