President's Message

As we endure the winter months it’s hard not to think of those sleeping rough on cold paving.
Often the people in this situation feel safer than being in shared shelter facilities.
I’m often surprised at how young the people are just living from day to day. Hard to imagine where they see their futures.
The Rotary theme for the period 23/24 is “Create Hope in the World,” an apt goal to strive for.
I hope together we can do just that!

NEWS FROM TIMOR LESTE

I am pleased to advise that Rotary RAWCS is willing to fund the ongoing costs for 2023 of the Ai-Asa and Belola School Gardens in the amount of $3,360.
I am also pleased to advise that Rotary is very happy to see the project expand to Burdin at an initial cost of $2,800.

The Ai-Asa and Belola gardens continue to flourish, then be replanted and grow again.  Sebastain is doing a great job there and is very proud of the gardens.  I’ve attached a few photos from the last few weeks at the schools. You can see the bananas are growing well - the most recent plantings are of eggplant, yard long beans and green beans.

We’re really excited about opening a garden at Budin. Given its location on the main road just before you start up the mountain to Balibo, we also see it as a great model project that we can show to people.

MODEL UNITED NATIONAL  ASSEMBLY  - MUNA
Port Phillip Rotary sponsored three teams of two girls each from Mac Robertson Girls’ Secondary’s Interact club to represent the school at the MUNA weekend on 20th and 21st May at the Mecure Hotel in North Melbourne.

This international youth program simulates the workings of the United Nations Assembly by having teams of two senior students from a number of schools represent a particular UN country. The students debate on matters of world political and social concern. The assembly aims to build goodwill, world peace and understanding through the experience of tackling issues from the viewpoint of the team’s ‘adopted’ country, even where this may be completely contrary to their own views. Students use research, debating and public speaking skills to address a wide range of contemporary and world-focussed issues. The program extends over a weekend, and it is chaired and judged by Rotarians. Neville Page (RC North Melbourne) is the Chair and is to be congratulated on such a successful event.

UPDATE FROM DARREL IN CAMBODIA
This is my first real update for the year.  We have just celebrated the Khmer New Year.  It occurs in April and yet it only seems like yesterday that it was New Year’s Day in Australia.  So many thoughts and emotions flash through my mind as I reflect on the past few months.

ROTARY YOUTH SAILING CHALLENGE
One of our MacRobertson Girls’ Secondary College Interact students, Dishika, was successful in her application to be a participant in the Rotary Youth Sailing Challenge. Dishika flew over to Adelaide then boarded the ship to sail back.  What an amazing experience for all participants!
