President's Report

Greetings All
I was watching a morning news programme over the weekend where they were talking about how many of our daily habits will have changed forever due to Covid, an example given was hand washing, which prompted an Australian comedian to say ‘that he had washed his hands so much that he uncovered a nightclub stamp from 1986’. I’m sure there are days when we all feel that we have washed away multiple layers of skin.

At our Club meeting on 20 July Bec Heitbaum was called on to give the Rotary Toast, Bec reflected on the values of Rotary and how they still stand today 80 years after a toast made by Paul Harris in 1940… Rotary stands, though the
tempest rage about, Rotary still stands. Why and how, because it is grounded not on fear, rivalry and
suspicion but on eternal and indestructible rocks of friendliness, tolerance and usefulness.
This led nicely to introducing a guest to our meeting, Julie Mason PDG and Chair of the Paul Harris
Society. Julie presented Bec with Paul Harris wings. In recognition of Bec’s unwavering support in all
things Rotary and her continued financial support to The Foundation. Bec is a veteran of
International conferences which have been the highlight of her year since attending her first
convention even as a busy mum of young children and business owner. Her commitment to Rotary is an inspiration to us all.
Bec has also joined the Board and has taken up the position of Club Secretary. We are delighted she
was able to join us.

At our Club meeting on 20 July we hosted guest speaker James McCully from Stella Maris Seafarers Mission.
Stella Maris Seafarers Mission is a not-for-profit organisation with more than 300 centres worldwide
providing pastoral care, services and support for seafaring people. The centres are part of the
Catholic Church’s official missionary work in it’s care of Seafarers. Shipping is crucial, yet often unseen component of the global economy. The forgotten essential workers of the world.
Those crew who sail the ships to and from our shores endure many challenges at sea, often
experiencing severe loneliness, isolation and depression and are separated from their families for months at a time.

What’s happening home and away…

The highlight of the week for me… Friday is my usual day to help Rotary Prahran distribute food

packs to Homeless Shelters in Melbourne. I usually arrive at 12.30pm load up 40+ bags and head to

the city. Susie Cole President of Rotary Club of Prahran phoned me in the morning asking if I could

arrive a little earlier as Chanel Nine we’re going to do a story on the Food sharing service.

Yes I could, apparently only needed a few shots of us packing the food into the bags and then

loading up the vehicles. Not so difficult! In order to give Rotary the best profile during filming we

Rotarians put on our Fluro Yellow vests. My vest went on top of multilayer of warm clothing and

with my hair tied up in a top knot. I suspect I looked more like a masked version of the yellow Teletubbie - Laalaa!

Pam tucked behind Mike Scott

43 bags, 1 weeks supply of meals for 1 person

The article will be aired on Tuesday or Wednesday, Chanel Nine.

Earlier in the week Sue Foley and I joined Alan Samuels of Impact Charity and Rotarian from Glen Eira, alongside fellow Glen Eira Rotarian and AG Lili Teichman and other volunteers to help de-tag 9000 new garments donated for free distribution to recipients. 3 boxes of Garments have been selected and boxed for transport to Mildura to help struggling drought stricken Farmers and their families.

Art Wall

Dear Rotarians and Friends of the Rotary Club of Caulfield Inc.,

The Rotary Club of Caulfield and internationally acclaimed Artist, Anthony Breslin, with the support of the Glen Eira Artists’ Society Inc., want to give a lasting gift to the Murrumbeena Community. One to inspire children and adults to follow their dreams.

There is a 50 meter wall on the cnr of Murrumbeena Road and Railway Parade in Murrumbeena Victoria Australia. It is currently painted black and graffitied extensively. We wish to cover the wall in over 75 panels communicating in original paintings and words the story of ‘Big Frog’.

This is a story from Anthony Breslin's children’s book ‘Brezania’. The story will be on the wall along with a vast array of crazy characters from the book.

The impact of the current Corona virus pandemic has included decimating the ability to fund community projects. The Rotary Club has been unable to run its fortnightly sausage sizzles outside Woolworths in Glen Huntly for months and all other usual methods of fundraising have been curtailed.

Accordingly the Rotary Club and GEAS have turned to crowdfunding to help pay the costs of art materials, special anti graffiti paint and scissor lifts etc, for the installation of the mural.
.

It is appreciated that many people are un- or underemployed and still more have had to take huge wage cuts. But if everyone could provide just a little it would really help and there are generous Thank You gifts offered for contributions. Every person who donates will have their name recorded on a special plaque within the mural, irrespective of the size of the donation.

Anthony is undertaking this artwork on a pro bono basis. The mural will help make Murrumbeena a place to visit and lift spirits after these challenging times.

This project is the Rotary Club of Caulfield’s Centennial Gift to Murrumbeena What a way to remember 100 years of Rotary in Australia and provide a positive memory of 2020.

To contribute please go to : https://www.gofundme.com/murrumbeena-wall-art?pc=em_dn_contacts_r&rcid=r01-159468764823-ebd8b7ed6b2e4a78&member=5010714

The List of Thank you Gifts for donors is attached.

Hope that you will be able to contribute and participate in this amazing community project.

Please feel free to share this information amongst your own networks and social media contacts.

PPCG

For over 45 years, the Port Phillip Community Group (PPCG) has been supporting and working with people who are the most marginalised and vulnerable in our community. Our belief and commitment to a society that promotes social inclusion and opportunities for all members of our community to feel valued and to obtain the skills to fully participate in community life remains the cornerstone of our organisation.
Due to the immediate impact of the COVID-19 pandemic we have established Share the Food which has meant that we have gone from feeding hundreds of people a week to feeding thousands. Between April – June PPCG has distributed a total of $300,000 worth of food and essential items to our typical client groups that have complex needs underpinned by poverty, family violence and lack of education and support, as well as the newly-unemployed, students, people on bridging visas and people who are falling through the cracks of assistance programs. To put this into context we usually distribute $200,000 worth of food and essential items per annum.
We know that come September 2020 when changes to JobKeeper and JobSeeker will happen that the need for food and other essential items will escalate as well as the need for our other services including financial counselling, physical, and psychological supports. Here are 3 ways that you can you can support PPCG and your local community
1.Volunteer your time and skills to PPCG to boost our staff capability and advocacy efforts.

2. Or make an EOFY 2020 tax-deductible donation to the Port Phillip Community Group by Tuesday 30 June 11:59pm - https://www.ppcg.org.au/support-us/donation/
This is the time to rally together and support vulnerable community members to the best of our ability. The Port Phillip Community Group (PPCG) makes a genuine difference to people who are doing it tough in our community, so please help us to continue to help the most vulnerable people in our community.

Kind Regards
Karen

This morning I felt sad, worried and a little depressed but I still decided to come to Empower. Since I have been here talking with you and receiving this food, I have felt happy again, grateful and welcome. I know that I am not alone."

"As an international student, it has not been easy but I am grateful to receive fresh and good quality food through Empower. On top of that, I am also so glad to receive not only food but also the love and support of the entire team with their service."
