CHRIS HENDRICKS_PRESIDENT
It is with excitement that I take on the presidency of Port Phillip Rotary Club. The club is renowned for punching above its weight and this proud tradition will continue. I will take this opportunity to thank Immediate Past President, Sue Foley, for her stewardship and vision. I look forward to working alongside each and every club member as we continue to serve others in our local, broader and global communities.
It was an honour and privilege to recognise the Rotary Club of Port Phillip Community Service Submission on “Melbourne Celtic Festival” at the Rotary District Changeover on Sunday, 30 June.
Thank you for your hard work and dedication in changing lives for the better in your unwavering commitment to “Service Above Self”. You and your Club can take some pride in your achievements in setting a benchmark in what Rotary Clubs can do to make a difference within our community. You have gone above and beyond in your dedication, passion, and hard work to exemplify the very essence of Rotary’s mission to create lasting change. You have demonstrated the power of collective action and the difference it can make.
Your outstanding project is an inspiration to all of us to continue our journey of service with renewed vigour and determination.
Keep up your good work in making this a better world for all.
As the school term concludes, here are some updates from our Interact Club.
Threeweeks ago, we concluded our second project for the year, Picture Books for Children. In this project, Interactees drafted, drew and wrote their own picture books across eight weeks. These books will be added to our 'BackPack4VICKids' drive, where necessities are donated to vulnerable children. This project is being co-headed by the Social Justice Portfolio at our school.
We devised this idea as an easy-to-implement, engaging project that resulted in handmade books with positive messages and uplifting morals for children in need. This aligns with our theme of reaching out to the wider community- this time, instead of senior citizens, to children. Our club members created these with online tools or by hand, overseen by Interact Director Cici.
As for the previous project, Cards to the Elderly, we ended up creating a visiting program to the Alba, starting with a musical performance by so-inclined Interactees during the first visit. We sent regular groups to the Alba every Thursday for six weeks, where we fostered a deeper bond with residents before finally gifting them the cards at the end. This made the experience more meaningful to both students and the elderly overall.
Lastly, we have recently started our new project, Paper Stars, led by our director Rachel. This project target's community was our own school- Interactees are writing thank-you messages for teachers on strips of paper and folding them into stars. The Executive Team will construct bouquets of these star 'flowers' to present to our teachers to thank them. We are amassing a cardboard box full of small paper stars and will continue this project in Term 3.
Thank you for reading, and I hope this report was helpful!
Hello Sue and member of the Rotary Club of Port Phillip
I hope you’re doing well and staying healthy!
I am very excited to share with you about my activities in June. I have done a lot of activities in my daily life. I have learned and got a lot of new experiences from all the activities this month.
Starting from my study at PUC University, this term was very hard for me because some subjects were very hard to understand but it still went smoothly. For me, I really enjoyed the health education course because I can learn about the health education that it relates to our daily routine. I have learned how to prevent hepatitis, diarrhea, cervical cancer and dengue disease from our professors. One more thing, I have done the midterm’s exam and the presentation in this course, and my topic is about nutrition basics. It helps me to understand about three classes of food and essential food that we need to have every day. This topic is very important for us, especially for the children that will face malnutrition more than adults. However, I want to share with you about the TDSO class, which is a special class that provides us with reading, speaking, and writing skills. In this class, it was very helpful for me because I can improve my reading, speaking, and writing skills a lot, even it is not very good, it is better than before I joined this class.
I contacted Veena at Port Phillip Community Group regarding Five Minutes of Fame open mic night. Veena said the intention was to hold the FMoF again as a Christmas celebration and they have applied for a grant to help cover the cost. They are most grateful for any financial support and are looking forward to Port Phillip Rotary partnering with them again and providing the meal on the night. Hopefully Grant Travill will be able to again provide a meal for 80-100 folks from local boarding houses in the Port Phillip area at a total cost $1500 as per the boards funding approval.
GIVING DAY: BACKPACKS FOR VIC KIDS
Wendy, Leonard and I attended the Giving event at Back Packs for Vic Kids Friday 7th June out at Cranbourne West. It was a well patronised event and a great pleasure to meet so many like minded people. Leonard and I both spoke on behalf of the club. Leonard made his donation directly to Back packs on behalf of the club. The club agreed to donate $500 to bring the donation to $2000. We were thrilled to have Sally Beard CEO give us a personal tour around the vast factory. Sadly the need for the service continues to rise. Unfortunately Marg was unwell and unable to attend on the day.
