FIVE MINUTES of FAME

I contacted Veena at Port Phillip Community Group regarding Five Minutes of Fame open mic night. Veena said the intention was to hold the FMoF again as a Christmas celebration and they have applied for a grant to help cover the cost. They are most grateful for any financial support and are looking forward to Port Phillip Rotary partnering with them again and providing the meal on the night. Hopefully  Grant Travill will be able to again provide a meal for 80-100 folks from local boarding houses in the Port Phillip area at a total cost $1500 as per the boards funding approval.

GIVING DAY: BACKPACKS FOR VIC KIDS
Wendy, Leonard and I attended the Giving event at Back Packs for Vic Kids Friday 7th  June out at Cranbourne West. It was a well patronised event and a great pleasure to meet so many like minded people.
Leonard and I both spoke on behalf of the club. Leonard made his donation directly to Back packs on behalf of the club. The club agreed to donate $500 to bring the donation to $2000.  We were thrilled to have Sally Beard CEO give us a personal tour around the vast factory.  Sadly the need for the service continues to rise. Unfortunately Marg was unwell and unable to attend on the day.

OUR MARG
Marg continues to find many products for donations through connecting people in her network. Marg volunteers on packing days at Backpacks for Vic Kids, Impact for Women, fundraising BBQ’s, packing days for Care Packs for the Mental Health Units in local hospitals, at DiK until recently, knitting squares for blankets for Wheel Chairs for Kids, sourcing fabric for Days for Girls and all manner of products for shipping to Fiji and Zambia. There is no doubt I have left something off the list. She invites Rotarians to join her on music afternoons at the  Brighton Beach Hotel.

SOUTH MELBOURNE COMMUNITY CHEST
I circulated the email from South Melbourne Community Chest advising that grant applications are open for local community projects. I don’t have any projects requiring funding currently. If you know of something please put in an application, it doesn’t have to be Rotary related.

BICYCLES
I have been offered large number of new bicycles and scooters. If you know of an organisation that can use them please let me know as I will be collecting them in the next few weeks.

SMALL COMFORTS
The board considered making an annual donation of $1000 to Small Comforts, a project initiated by our club and now run by a group of clubs, using a similar funding plan for RIMERN and DiK.  I deliver care packs to the Alfred Hospital Mental Health Unit fortnightly. The project has now grown and covers Box Hill, the Royal and St Vincent’s hospitals. We pack and deliver approximately 200 care packs monthly. The items in the packs are very specific and often have to be purchased.

CLUB SECRETARY UPDATE:
The club membership was updated in June prior to 1 July to enable the correct calculation of the annual club fee payable to RI from our members.
We have farewelled Jason for the time being due to his ongoing work commitments. We welcome Martin and Yvonne to the club. Their induction will be held when DG Michael visits on 5 August.

MUNA
Wendy and I attended the final afternoon of MUNA and were most impressed at the level of debate.
WINTER SAIL
Albert Park Yacht Club Winter Sail youth regatta started on Friday 11 July and finished Sunday afternoon with a final race for the participants to show their newly learnt skills.
Milla spoke to all the participants at the opening of the regatta on behalf of our club. Well done, Milla.
The admin members of the yacht club mentioned how they are happy for us to use their club house for any of our meetings or events.
Warwick or one of the yacht club members have been asked to speak at the club following the event.
