JULY: MATERNAL and CHILD HEALTH

July is Rotary International's designated month for Maternal and Child Health. Rotary clubs around the world focus their efforts during this month on raising awareness and funds to support programs that improve the health and well-being of mothers and children. This includes initiatives like providing access to quality healthcare, immunizations, and education on topics like family planning and disease prevention.

Every day mothers risk their lives giving birth and millions of children die each year from treatable, preventable causes. At least 7 million children under the age of five die each year due to malnutrition, poor health care, and inadequate sanitation. To help reduce this rate, we provide immunizations and antibiotics to babies, improve access to essential medical services, and support trained healthcare providers for mothers and their children. Rotary projects ensure sustainability by empowering the local community to take ownership of healthcare training programs.

More than 80 percent of maternal deaths can be prevented with access to reproductive health services and trained health care workers. Rotarians provide education, immunizations, birthing kits, and mobile health clinics to support these causes. Women are taught how to prevent mother-to-infant HIV transmission, how to breast-feed, and how to protect themselves and their children from disease.
Rotary makes high-quality health care available to vulnerable mothers and children so they can live longer and grow stronger.

The Rotary Foundation reaches mothers and children in need by giving communities the help and training they need to take control of their own maternal and infant health care.

GREETINGS FORM DARREL IN CAMBODIA
Greetings from Cambodia,

We want to say a heartfelt thank you; thank you for standing with Cambodia Clean Water & Toilet Project in bringing lasting change to some of Cambodia’s most vulnerable people.

Your generosity fuels this work. Your partnership encourages us to keep going.  During the last financial year, through your support, we have installed 86 Washroom Toilets and 8 Clean Water Bores.

I'm asking for your help to keep this vital work continuing, for children such as these and their families.

Best wishes

Darrel

MUNA - MODEL UNITED NATIONS ASSEMBLY

2025 MUNA Reflections and Photos- The Mac.Robertson Girls’High School

Reflection 1:

Going into MUNA as Germany, I wasn’t totally sure what to expect (especially because we’re such a politically ‘neutral’ country) - but by the end of the weekend, I was praying for time to go slower. It was equally one of the most intimidating yet ridiculously fun things I’ve done. I met so many brilliant people - some of whom I’ll definitely stay in touch with - and had chats that genuinely shifted how I think about politics, diplomacy, and the future. A few experienced delegates gave me fantastic advice about future MUNs and uni, and now I’m seriously considering studying international relations… and maybe even becoming a diplomat. Massively grateful to have received such an opportunity! Thank you so much Claire, Samantha, Ms. Ziyad and the Rotary Club of Port Phillip!

- Mayumdi Gamagedara 10F

Reflection 2:

"Dissent against the chair’s ruling."     "Point of interest."

These phrases defined my weekend on the 24th and 25th of May at the Model United Nations Assembly hosted by the Rotary Club of Woodend. It was a formative and enriching experience for me and my fellow delegates. Beyond gaining a deeper understanding of how international relations operate, I learned how to think and speak on the spot, build alliances under pressure, carefully tailor my words for strategic effect, and form lasting friendships in just two days. This competition opened my eyes to new perspectives and gave me a clearer sense of the person I aspire to become—something I glimpsed through observing the confidence, poise, and passion of my fellow Year 11 and 12 delegates.

In conclusion, the Model United Nations Assembly was not only an engaging and thought-provoking event but also a meaningful milestone in my personal growth.

- Shreya Kalani 10A

Reflection 3:

Model UN was such a valuable experience. It pushed me out of my comfort zone, especially with speaking and thinking under pressure. I loved thinking through the perspective of a delegate, and it was so much fun making little 'alliances' with fellow countries and creating solutions together. I met so many amazing people from different schools and made some new friends. It is most definitely something I'd try again!
