May is Rotary’s Youth Service Month! Throughout the month, Rotarians, Rotaractors, and younger members of the Rotary family, including Interactors and RYLA and Rotary Youth Exchange participants, celebrate the service, leadership development, connections, and FUN of Rotary’s programs for young leaders.
Every year, over 350,000 young leaders participate in Rotary’s youth programs across Interact, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), and Rotary Youth Exchange. Rotary’s Youth Service Month is an opportunity to promote our young leaders’ local and global impacts and the Rotary and Rotaract clubs that make these programs possible.
We have many stories to share in this month's bulletin, which showcases our commitment to fostering our future leaders.
Congratulations to Alan Samuel on being recognised as a member of the The Polio Plus Society. Alan was presented with a certificate and badge at the Port Phillip Rotary club meeting on Monday 6th May by President Sue Foley.
HOW WE FIXED SOMEONE ELSE'S SHODDY TOILETS IN CAMBODIA
In Rotary Year 2022/23 the Rotary Clubs of Port Philip and Chadstone East Malvern teamed up with District 9800 World of Difference and the Rotary Foundation to resurrect several toilets built by a shoddy provider in the remote village of Kok Beng Cambodia.
The shoddy provider built single tank toilets that simply consolidated contamination of the supply of drinking water from the water table AND required the villagers to take out loans to pay for a shoddy toilet.
Here is an update for the MacRob Interact Club. We have reached our first significant milestone for the year with the conclusion of our first project, Cards to the Elderly.
Having identified senior loneliness as a rising issue, particularly after the pandemic, our directors chose to try and alleviate this in the community by starting an initiative where Interactees create greeting cards to gift to an aged care, in this case, The Alba just across the road from our school.
The majority of Term 1 saw over 200 Interactees, online and in-person, creating cards and decorating them with positive messages. Students used paper and stationery or designed them online.
Sreypich is a Rotaract member of Siem Reap, Cambodia and Port Phillip Rotary are sponsoring her for the year. Sreypich is studying hard as is testified by her outstanding mid year results. Sreypich managed to spend time with her family during the Kmer New Year season, which was delightful to read about. Not only does Sreypich study hard, honour her family but also manages to roll up her sleeves to support her community. Please take a minute or two to read her wonderful email.
During Easter, I began reflecting on the past few months. Easter is a time for reflection that reminds us of Love, Compassion, Action and New Life. There is a challenge in the book of Proverbs to put our love into action.
Port Phillip Rotary are proud sponsors of the Alert Park Yacht Club's WINTERSAIL through supporting a young person to develop sailing skills through the event.
Rotarians from both Brighton North and Port Phillip met at the Nottinghill Warehouse to pack Care Bags for clients accessing the services of the Alfred Hospital and Box Hill Hospital's Mental Health Units.
Cynthia Kralik, the CEO of the charity Ready Set, was our guest speaker Monday 6th May. Cynthia spoke with honesty and passion about the charity and was totally engaging.
